| In February of 2001, we lost our dear friend Jim
Palmer

|
James Palmer in Bainbridge Rotary
Jim was inducted into the Bainbridge Rotary Club on October
4, 1979. Bob White of Oneonta was District governor that year and the
District Conference was at the Pocono Manor in Pennsylvania. Jim was
a member for 21 years and four months.
.
On September 30, 1993 Jim gave a program on RYLA. Jim became our club RYLA
Chairperson and a member of the District RYLA Committee. He eventually
became the Chairperson of that RYLA District Committee and served on the
committee for 18 years and the RYLA kids meant a lot to Jim. On
October 14, 1993 Jim had the RYLA Students at our meeting and each talked
to the club about their experiences for a few minutes. |
For many years Jim
did this each year as his program to the club. (On September 1996 records
show he again gave a RYLA Program.)
On August 26, 1999 Jim had Mary Drachler as the program and Mary gave
us the history of Jedediah Smith. |
For many years before Jim became a member of Rotary he helped the club in
selecting a worthy student for the "Stan Hunt Service
Above Self Award."
After becoming a member he headed that committee as well as RYLA and did a
superb job.
In 1981 Jim, as Chairperson of "Service above Self Committee'
selected Jeff Chunglo for this award of $150.00 for his dedication as a
high school student on the Emergency Squad. |
|
Jim was always active in ALL projects; Pancake Day, Ice Cream Booth at the
Canoe Regatta, Scout House renovations, and many more. 88
On April 7, 1989 Jim announced to the club that he had Five applicants for
the RYLA Program to be interviewed soon.
The June 24, 1994 Bulletin States, "Congratulations to Tom Braccio
and Jim Palmer for their collaborative efforts on the RYLA Theme
Song." Realizing that Ryla did not have a Theme Song for the
RYLA week of events Jim compassed the words for this song and asked Tom
Braccio to put the words to music which Tom did. They both asked me (Fran
Chunglo) if I could enter this into my computer and print our some copies.
With great effort in creating the music lines and putting the music
notes on or between the proper line I finally got this to Tom and Jim¹s
satisfaction. This is now the Official Ryla Theme Song.¹
The club awarded Jim a Paul Harris Fellow for all the work he did for
Bainbridge and Rotary and Rotary District 7170. I believe this was two
years ago.(1999)
