Sam DiNoto brought us Lou Palombo who told us about his father who was in
the State Troopers in the 1930ls and 40s. He was part of the Rough Riders
that were stationed in Sidney. The Rough Riders were a trick riding team
and
Lou had a video from the 1930s that showed some of their stunts. In

On May 10, 2001 the Rotary Club of Bainbridge
announced the selection of Heather Bucalos as the Jim Palmer Memorial
Scholar, who will participate in the Rotary Youth
Leaders Conference to be held this summer in Mr. Palmers memory. RYLA
was near and dear to Mr. Palmer and his memory will also continue, as he
was the writer of the RYLA song sung each year at the close of the
conference. Michele Shirkey, local Committee Chairperson, stated
that Heather will be among the 100 to 110 area high school seniors who
will live, work, study and play together at Hartwick College at Oneonta
from Sunday, June 25 through Friday, June 29, 2001. Aimed at developing
the leadership potential of young people, the conference will feature
speakers and workshops focusing on decision-making, critical thinking,
communicating effectively, ethics, career development, public service,
contemporary problems and other challenging issues. |

6/7/01:
Bainbridge Rotarian Jim Leonard introduced his niece,
Beverly Sowersby as the speaker at the June 7 meeting. Beverly is employed
at the McCormick Secure Youth Center For Youth at Ithaca, NY and resides
in Sidney, NY. She gave us a detailed picture of the youth¹s day,
the programs they participate in and the treatment they receive. She
showed Afghans that several of her 13 OGroup kids¹ (as she calls them)
knitted for her for her birthday and another that others gave her for
Christmas. Beverly told the club that for the many
years McCormick has been in existence as a maximum security for youth
(from 15 through 20) there has
never been an escape. She declined to comment about the facility
being
considered by the state for a comparable facility in Bainbridge but did
say
that she would have no fears about living in the same community.
She is a former Bainbridge resident who graduated from B-G
High School. She
received her degree in psychology from Oneonta State University. Many
thanks Jim for bringing us such a great informational program.
