7/24/01:
Dale Fox gave a talk on how he got started in the paddle business.
He became interested in canoeing while working for Grumman. when
they moved to the Bainbridge area he picked out their house because of the
proximity of the Clinton Park. Dale bought the paddle business from
Al Camp 5 years ago and has gone from making 500 paddles to over 1500.
He has developed some new designs and has also started making kayak
paddles. He is the 10th largest wood paddle maker in the US. He
showed us the article that written up in Canoe and Kayak. He also
said that all of their raw materials are bought localy except for the
redwood. Their new website is www.camppaddle.com.
Dale and Bev and their sons Liam and Andy are all working hard in the

8/9/01: Bill Schryver of Oneonta Bus
Lines spoke at the Bainbridge Rotary Club meeting last Thursday. Bill who
lives in Gilboa NY and teaches high School math, drives Charter bus for
fun! He explained to the Club that
he has always wanted to travel and see more of the United States and as a
teacher he has his summers free. He decided that driving bus was a great
way to meet his goals. He gets to see interesting places and get paid for
it as well. He informed the club that the icing on the cake was when he
got the opportunity to drive the 30 day |
"Discover America Bus
Trip" organized by Rotarian Mike Wilcox. This
trip which goes from the East Coast to the West Coast and back gives 134
Rotary Exchange students a chance to see the United States. The trip
includes Niagara Falls, Chicago, Mt. Rushmore, The Grande Tetons, Yellow
Stone park, Salt Lake City, Reno, San Francisco, Los Angles, the Grande
Canyon, Houston Space center, Graceland, Dollywood in Pidgin forge Myrtle
Beach, Washington DC and lots more.
Although some days cover over 500 miles Bill has been more than happy to drive the trip for that last 3 years because he enjoys
seeing this country but also enjoys the students themselves.
He told the Rotary Club how
impressed he was with the behavior of 134 teenagers from 36 different
Countries. He also drive the 3 day New York City trip for Rotary each
October. The Club enjoyed hearing from this gentleman who enjoys his work.

Candace Phelan was The Bainbridge Rotary Club's guest speaker on
Thursday, August 23, 2001.
Candace is a Youth Case Manager for the BOCES Work Force Youth Services.
This program places young people ages 14-21 a chance to gain work experience and explore employment options with area employers. This
program provides youth with hourly wages at no cost to the employers. The employers provide supervision and develop work skills for the youth.

Bainbridge Youth Michael Robinson travels with Student Ambassador
Program
On August 30, 2001 Rotary member Jeff Rivenburg brought to us a program
"People to People Student Ambassador". Twelve year old, Michael Robinson spoke to a variety of wide-eyed
Rotarians at a recent meeting. Michael was one of 37 students from the surrounding area who traveled for 3 weeks to the following countries:
Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France and England (both London and Bath.)
Along with the donations from area business, clubs and his parents financially supporting him, Michael got the opportunity of a lifetime.
His favorite attraction was the Swiss Alps where he got to ride in a cable car in Trummelbach Falls, Switzerland. Michael was very grateful
to have the opportunity to visit all of these locations. |

Bainbridge/Guilford High school. It was also announced that applications from American High School students are being accepted now for the 2002 -

program envisions the vitality of Chenango County. If you would like to

Rotarian
Linda Watson presented Jay Joyce chairman of Leadership
Chenango as the guest speaker at Bainbridge Rotary meeting on September
6, 2001. Mr. Joyce spoke on this program, which promotes leadership in
Chenango County. Having been through the program
he, graduating from it in 1996, Jay knows first hand how important it is
to encourage people to participate in the program. The following are the
five goals of Leadership Chenango:
Identify potential leaders
Expose those participants to many aspects of the community
Enhance personal leadership skills, strengths and opportunities
Become Alumni
Provide an Alumni Network

Bainbridge
Rotarian Michele Shirkey , on September 13, 2001, brought Danielle
Craver and Heather Bucalos participated in Rotary's Annual Youth
Leadership Conference at Hartwick College, Oneonta this past June.
Danielle and Heather spoke on the program which ran from early morning
until late in the evening every day. There were several speakers, small
group activities, physical challenges and inspirational events. The
girls both commented on the positive attitudes, the great speakers, great
food and the friendships they have made for life during this experience.

Coach Rice also spoke to Rotarians regarding the different phases of
construction happening in the B-G School District as well as touching on
Spectator Sportsmanship.

Bainbridge Varsity Football Players Join Rotary For Lunch

Rotarian Sam DiNotyo brought to us the B-G Football Coach and two of the
team to tell the club about the teams activities and what is going on at
B-B. Dedicated and hard workings were some of the words Bainbridge Varsity
Foot Ball Coach/ Athletic Director Steve Rice used when describing two seniors present at our Rotary meeting. on Sept.. 20th. Eric Kitchen,
Fullback for the B-G Bobcats had 5 touchdowns in the recent game against Waverly. He was one of
four running backs gaining over 100 yards in this game. Coach Rice commented on
Eric's excellent playing ability, speed and the ability to not be taken down easily. Mica Casey, Running back for B-G was recently
named the Norwich Evening Sun' "Player Of The Week". He was found
to have over 150 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns and played an outstanding
game of defensive end.
Both athletes are also dedicated to off-season training/weight lifting programs. |

On September 20th, we also inducted 2
new members into the Bainbridge Rotary Club. Father and son team George
M. Sands (right) and George M. Sands IV
(left). In center, sponsor Helen Hernandez. George M. Sands,
the senior, is a retired WWII Veteran who served in the North Africa and
the Italian campaign in Europe. After the war, he got married (3
children) and had several successful businesses in the Bronx. His
classification is Transportation; he used to own a limousine
company. Mr. Sands is also the Director of the State-wide Forging
the Freedom Trail Project; he is the initiator of Great
Stuff Is Made Locally and an avid supporter of the Route
206 Scenic Byway Project. |

is a US Navy Veteran and is following in his father's footsteps, being an
entrepreneur in collective marketing and computer support services.
Currently, he is working on an Internet project under the direction of Mr.
Sands, the senior, that will feature businesses, recreational areas and
other anemities along the Route 206 Corridor. See one of his examples. |

9/27/01: Local Couple rides in 100 mile Bike-A-Thon
Past President, Otto Behrens was a guest of the Bainbridge Rotary Club
at the September 27 meeting. Mr. Behrens spoke about a Bike-A-Thon for Leukemia. He and his wife Dalene will be participating in a one-day
100 mile trek in Maryland. He discussed the intensive training he and his wife have been going through in order be ready for the ride.
(They are two of the four people who will be participating from Central New York.) Their goal was to raise $5000.00 in pledges, and they have
achieved that goal through the sponsorship of friends and family and the local
community. There are approximately 7,000 people expected to ride during the Bike-A-Thon in Maryland later this
month.

The Behrens are currently doing a test ride of 82 miles from Greene to Sherburne. They are very anxious to get the
Maryland ride to help find a cure for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hotchkin's Disease and other blood related cancers. If you would like
